The sump pit collects water seeping under the slab and around the foundation, and the pump pushes it back outside before it reaches the basement floor. A pump that no longer kicks in, a failed check valve on the discharge line, or a pit that has never been serviced are among the most common causes of a wet basement that has nothing to do with the municipal sewer.

A basement that takes on water with no rain falling, or that stays damp for days after a storm, rarely points to the sewer: it's usually groundwater seeping in under the slab or along the foundation wall. It's often mistaken for a sewer backup, especially when the water shows up in the same part of the basement; the simplest test is smell and colour — clear or slightly cloudy water coming in along the bottom of a wall points to the sump, grey water with a sewer smell rising out of a floor drain points to the main line.
The inspection first checks whether the pump kicks in at the right level and is actually pushing water outside — a discharge pipe that's disconnected or frozen over winter looks exactly like a failed pump even though the pump itself is working fine. It also checks the check valve on the discharge line, which stops rejected water from falling back into the pit between cycles, and the condition of the pit floor, where sediment built up over years cuts into usable volume and wears the motor out early.
A battery backup pump or a two-pump system is clearly worth the investment for a house running on a single sump pump that has already lost power during a storm. It's worth a lot less for a house on ground noticeably higher than the street, with no high water table and no history of the pit overflowing — adding a backup system there answers a worry rather than a demonstrated risk.
Price depends on the depth and condition of the existing pit — digging a new one costs far more than swapping a pump in a pit that's already there — on the horsepower needed for the volume of water involved, and on the type of backup chosen: a battery covers a few hours, a secondary pump run off municipal water pressure keeps working as long as the water's flowing, but costs more to install. Rerouting a discharge line that currently empties too close to the foundation, or worse, into the sanitary sewer instead of outside, often gets added to the job.
On the low streets near the Rivière des Prairies, the water table rises noticeably during spring melt and after a long rain, working the pump much harder than in a higher-lying area. A house on that kind of ground that has never had a problem can easily keep going that way for years — but the day the pump does give out, it's almost always during the exact event that was pushing it hardest.
The distinction between groundwater and a sewer backup matters for what comes next: insurers generally treat these as two different categories of damage. Photograph the water itself — its colour, its smell, the exact point where it's coming in — before you start cleaning up, and note whether a power outage coincided with the event; that detail helps establish whether the cause was a mechanical failure or the sheer size of the storm.
